α-酮醛以优异的产率得到分子内歧化产物。

卡尼扎罗反应机理:

一个有趣的变体,交叉Cannizzaro反应,使用甲醛作为还原剂:

目前,可以用各种氧化还原剂进行转化(产率较高),因此,除了上述α-酮醛的转化外,目前卡尼扎罗反应的合成实用性有限。
当醛类在基本条件下处理时,卡尼扎罗反应应作为潜在副产物的来源。
